Blog #8: Bailout Money

This blog is not an attack on any political party, but rather a scorching criticism of an abuse of power and money. And we’re not talking about just anybody’s money, but mine and yours. Click on the link below to learn further about the horrendous act that AIG committed with taxpayer bailout money. This one really angers me!

The other day while at the bookstore I overheard a comment “It’s the average American that’s getting a kick in the seat of the pants, not those executives or politicians.” That perhaps summarizes the situation best! Granted AIG returned the money, and Congress passed a 90% tax on those bonuses, so the end result is the money went back to the treasury. However, what sort of mentality does AIG have that the bonuses were paid in the first place? Would they have voluntarily returned the money if not caught? Congress is angered but they are the very ones that approved the money without stipulations.

Consider this: should tax dollars be used for correcting others mistakes? Should tax dollars be used to pay off private debt, and if so, who should get that money? I have a mortgage and would love for someone else to repay that loan despite the fact I promised to pay the money back.
Getting back to AIG, should we point an accusing finger at the executives in that company? What about the politicians that approved the money? Should specific guidelines have been given with that money? These are but a few of the observations I want you to consider. Post your response to the fiasco going on with AIG. Make sure your opinions are well thought out and well articulated.

I don't think that out hard-earned tax money should be used to correct others poor choices. I don't think AIG deserved this money, and on top of that, they did not desserve the bonuses! Like Mr. M pointed out, bonuses should be a reward for good decisions or good work, not when you are going bankrupt! The government should use our tax dollars fairly, not give it to some company through its own bad decisions is going bankrupt. And if they had to give them money, they should have said "here, take this mmoney. Use however much you need to get back on your feet, and give the extra back to us. And you can pay the rest back later." i thikn it should haev been a loan, and a loan that was just about the right amount to keep them from complete bankruptcy.

I agree with michelle, that the money probably should have been a loan, and they should't have given the employees bonuses when the company about went bankrupt. They just didn't deserve it! I they should have just saved the money or given it back so the government instead of giving them bonuses because all they did was give the employees money (that the majority of them probably used to go on vacation) for doing a bad job! That isn't right.

Great job! This particular topic has impassioned views and can be very divisive. Michelle and Anna, thank you for commenting!

i agree with both Anna and Michelle why would the government give them so much money if they didnt need it all. They should have given the government back any extra not give bonuses. Even on top of all that why would they give the people a reward for almost making the company bankrupt. In the first pace it was the peoples fault the company got bankrupt. The secondly they got a bonus for it it doesnt make sense its retarted.

No, I dont think tax dollars should be used to correct others mistakes because they should fix it with their own money. They should be made to liquidate all their assets and stop throwing big parties. They shouldn't use our money to help there personal life. They should have guidelines or rules about our money.

I do not think that AIG should have gotten all that money to get out of bankrupt and then give out bonuses. I do not think we should have paid for somebody else to get a bonus. they should have returned all the extra money back to the government so that they could use it for a better reason then a bonus.

I think that it was good that they gave money to help AIG since it is a big insurance company but I don't like that they gave bonuses to there employees when they are already getting paid there normal salary I think they should have just gave enough money for them to get out of bank ruptcy.
